Someone once said, “Money is the root of all evil.”
But that is not true!
The real quote is, “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.”
–The Apostle Paul.
So then, What Is Money?
I was a commercial banker for 23 years and my job was to rent money. Sounds funny but I was a small business lender and that’s what lenders do.
So, on my second day on the job a man came into my branch and sat down at my desk. Not in front of my desk but in my chair!
He said, “There are 467 branches in this banking system and I run all of them, my name is Dave and I am your boss!”
I sat down in front of my desk and said it was nice to meet him.
Then he said to me, “A carpenter uses a hammer, it’s his tool. An electrician uses a screwdriver, it’s his tool. And a banker uses money, it’s his tool.”
“BUT”, he said, “If you, as a banker start to love this money, this tool the bank allows you to use – you will steal it. And when you steal it I will put you in jail. Do you understand?”
Some 23 years, 4 banks and 4 bosses later, my new boss fell in love with the bank’s money, he stole it and today he sits in a federal prison.
I have never forgotten, money is only a tool and never to be loved.
